We have all seen the cable TV ads claiming they can settle IRS debts for “pennies on the dollar,” and they have “ex IRS agents” to help us. These claims are almost always false.

In my experience, the IRS vehemently opposes Offer in Compromise and will use every factual and procedural device to avoid granting one. Though I have successfully obtained dozens of them- they are the exception- but they do work in the right cases. An experienced tax representative should be able to look at your situation and tell you if an Offer in Compromise will work at the very first conference.

Don’t tie your hopes to an Offer in Compromise. They are infrequently granted and there are often other and better choices to resolve tax debts.
